Each year around this time I attend the Origins Game Expo here in Columbus, Ohio. For those who aren't familiar with it, Origins is part game manufacturer exposition, part game player event. There are educational seminars for those who make games, or want to break into the business. There are educational sessions about military history, diplomacy, and other topics that relate to gaming in some way. There are celebrity visitors who meet their fans and sign autographs. There is a large exhibit hall filled with dealers selling game items and manufacturers demonstrating their latest games. By far the largest part of the event, though, is the gaming activity itself. At Origins, you'll find people playing Dungeons and Dragons, Crimson Skies, Magic: The Gathering, Guild Wars, City of Heroes, Monopoly, and about any other game you can imagine... along with many more you definitely can't imagine. I've been going there for years and I always see some game I couldn't have imagined before... I used to spend a lot of time at the game auction and in the exhibit hall. The folks running the auction changed a while back. Since then, it seems the attendance, quality, and quantity of items in the auction has dropped drastically. I haven't even dropped by the last couple of years. This year, I plan to check in with the Red Shirt Games folks and their Injurius Games sessions, the Rogue Judges and their Car Wars Rogue Arena game, Red Shirt's Silent Death, Steve Jackson Games' Hacker, and some other games like "Red Shirt Down", "The Pirate Game!", and "Tech Support". You will also find me wandering the Vendor Room and the hallways. Please feel free to say "hi" if you see me, and let me know you read the site. I plan to provide some written, photographic, and maybe even digital video coverage of Origins 2006 here on the site, so if you have any interest in gaming - whether or not you care about Origins itself, you might want to check in with this site over the next few days.
