A while ago, cigarbid.com offered Profesor Sila demi-corona cigars at an excellent price (about $20 a box).  I bought a box, largely on the strength of the write-up on their site and the fact that these once sold at about $200 a box.  Here are my thoughts after smoking one of them...

The Profesor Sila demi-corona cigar is a 5-inch length at a 30 ring gauge.  Its outer wrapper is a Connecticut-Ecuador leaf around a core of Dominican long fillers.  The cigar is made by Augusto Reyes in the Dominican Republic.  While still in the cellophane, it looks like this:

Here's a closer view of the cigar, after unwrapping:

Another shot of the Profesor Sila Demi-Corona Cigar

The cigars came cello-wrapped with a band around the foot of the cigar to protect it and another in the usual spot.  The band isn't especially attractive to me, being a plain white paper with some goldish printing on it and little or no other artwork.  You'd almost call this a "generic" bit of labeling, which is a bit of foreboding I think.

The outer wrapper was a light brown, with noticeable veins running through it.  The wrapper was, to my eyes at least, slightly green in color but brown overall.

According to Cigars International, these used to sell for about $200 a box.  They describe the cigar experience as a "pleasant, mild to medium-bodied flavor...a mellow, smooth, everyday smoke that will reward you with its relaxing and very pleasant taste."  On their web site, Cigars International also quotes Smoke Magazine as saying that "Profesor Sila cigars provide a very even and mild smoking experience in a slow-burning cigar of superior construction."

A draw on the cigar before lighting it produced a pleasant tobacco flavor, one that gave me high hopes for the actual draw once it was lit.  Since the cigar is fairly short, I removed the main band after removing the protective band over the foot.  This proved to be a mistake, as the cigar's wrapper wanted very much to crumble and unwrap itself after this.  Nevertheless, I managed to hold it together and light  it.  It lit fairly easily and the draw was equally easy.

The initial flavor was indeed extremely mild.  I wasn't sure for the first 3-4 draws that I was even getting any smoke.  After that, the cigar's true flavor began to emerge.  I'm not quite sure how to describe it.  It was tolerable but I can't say that I found it pleasant. Another review describes it as "a rich, nutty body with traces of woodiness".  That might be a fair description.  It didn't taste as much to me like a cigar as it did a burning piece of wood or a brush fire.  I could only stand about a third of it before I let it go out, then threw it away.  I'll try another later, in case I got the "bad one" out of the box, but it may be a while before I summon the courage.  If the next one is as unpleasant to my taste as this one, I'll be finding good homes for the rest of the box.

Comparing this to other cigars I've smoked recently, it gets about a 4 or 4.5 rating on a 1-10 scale where 10 is excellent.  It may not be the worst cigar I've ever had, but it's FAR from the best.
