XBox The Godfather Game Case - Reviewed HereSo I was playing "The Godfather" last night on my friend's xBox. Besides the fact that the xBox controller is the most evil and insidious invention on the planet, the controls were pretty straightforward and easy to use (but they're better on a PS2 controller, I'm sure). To start off with, the beginning cinematography is absolutely outstanding! Graphics, story, voice acting, all the elements needed for a great game are present right from the very start.

The story starts off with (extremely minor spoiler) a brief tutourial that ends with a man being gunned down in front of his young kid. Guess who that kid grows up to be? That's right, he's our main character and I'll bet he'll want a little taste of revenge before it's over.

To begin with, the world is HUGE, looking like something that came directly from Grand Theft Auto. Starting off you'll create your own character from menus that look very reminescent of Tiger Woods golf. I didn't mess with this too much and just hit "randomize" to continue on (God was he ugly lookin')....but character creation is very in-depth and looks like it could take quite a while to perfect.

I started off by beating the living crap outta a couple random men and women on the street and taking in my surroundings. The controls have a kinda Fight Night feel with fighting taking place on the right analog stick. After I got the hang of it I noticed that when your opponent's energy gets low enough you have the option to "execute" him/her. I thought to myself "Can it get any better than instant death?" Well, immediately after that my character leveled up!! At this point I was ready to wet my freakin' pants... I mean graphic disturbing violence with RPG elements, what next? In fact it seems like almost every element of the game seems to come from existing blockbuster titles. Shooting is natural and easy with the option to fine tune your aim just like the James Bond third person titles. Needless to say I extorted a couple of shopkeepers (I suggest beating their head into the cash register, it's classic) and went straight to work with my personal war and vendetta against the police. I leveled up a couple times and saw that you can upgrade your abilites (fighting, shooting, street smarts, etc.) and some other interesting things that I didn't have time to fully explore.

As with all things good there were some minor flaws but nothing that took away from the overall fun of the game. Example the AI might not be the best I've ever seen. I was having a great time grabbing random people and throwing them into oncoming traffic (yes, I need therapy) and the police didn't seem to have a single problem with it. I beat a woman down in the middle of the street with a damn bat RIGHT NEXT TO A COP and still nothing. Could you do anything to tick the police off? Well try to steal a car and those guys are on you like white on rice. Come on, priority people, even in those times I'm pretty sure battery and murder carried much stiffer penalties than grand theft auto but ok, whatever. Random thugs on the street carry almost anything from baseball bats to tommy guns but if you piss them off they will, most of the time, run across the street and start beating on you with their bare hands. Dude, if you have a freaking gun USE IT! On top of that the only other minor flaw I have seen has to do with explosion phsyics. In the game you can blow safes you come across with a little TNT (word to the wise....stay waaaay back). The first time I did this I ran into another room but was in direct line of sight of the safe and the resulting explosion threw my character into the opposite wall and almost killed me. Cool, I thought to myself, explosions are pretty realistic in this game. Well needless to say I came across another safe moments later with two guards standing on either side of it. With an evil grin and maniacal laugh I threw down my dynamite and ran like hell outta there....BOOM! I ran back in to inspect the choas to find one of the guards was still alive!! It seems a Japanese screen sheilded him from a blast that certainly would have reduced him and the room to a pile of muck in real life. Bummer.

In summation all I can really say is this.....if you're looking for a beautiful game that combines the free roaming world of the Grand Theft Auto series, with RPG elements, the shooting style of James Bond, the analog control of Fight Night, while keeping you immersed in the storyline and gritty world that is "The Godfather"....this game is for you. I'll be picking up my copy directly after work....and maybe leaving early to do it!!

Over a 9.0 (out of 10) game rating for sure!!
