Those of you who are Star Trek fans will probably remember the scene in the (original series cast) movies where Scotty barters the formula for "transparent aluminum" in exchange for the plexiglass he needs to build a whale tank on a Klingon ship.  What you may not know is that there is, today, a transparent material made from aluminum that in fact matches Scotty's description pretty well.
