If you haven’t been paying attention to the courts lately, you might have missed the fact that the Supreme Court decided that it’s perfectly acceptable for the government (as in the local, state, or federal government) to seize the private property of ordinary citizens under “eminent domain” legislation and sell it to other private parties, if doing so is in the “greater public good”. For instance, if a casino developer wants to buy the block of property your house sits on to build its next casino, all it has to do is convince your local government that the jobs and money it will bring in justifies taking away your home. I personally think this is a poor decision that shows a lack of respect for private citizens. Apparently, I’m not the only one. A group of real estate developers is proposing to build a hotel on the site of Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter’s home. For real, not as a publicity stunt or prank. For details see: http://www.freestarmedia.com/hotellostliberty2.html I, for one, hope they are successful!
