Recently, I published an article about the attempts by some of our more enlightened legislators to ban the use of unattended traffic law enforcement cameras (the so-called "red light cameras"). In a nutshell, I contend that they are primarily used as revenue enhancers and not as a means of improving motorists' safety. Our government is currently voting on a law that would require a police officer to be present to issue the citation that these cameras "detect". If you haven't written your Ohio representatives and senators yet, you should. Here's more evidence to prove my point. A recent study proves that the key to reducing red-light crashes isn't the use of red-light cameras but rather an extension to the length of time a light remains yellow before going to red. Adding time to yellow light duration is a fix that doesn't require the purchase of additional equipment and doesn't become an "easy money" source for small governments.
