As part of a trade with a member of the CigarBid.com forums, I received a Cohiba Red Dot Pequeno cigar. Yesterday, while waiting on my step-son to finish playing 9 holes at a nearby public golf course (Wilson Road for those of you who know or care), I lit up the cigar. (Since then, I purchased a 6-pack tin from CigarBid.com and took some better photos for the article.) Here is a review of my experiences...
The Cohiba Red Dot Pequeno (Pequeno is Spanish for "small") is a 4.25" by 34 ring gauge cigar. It is reportedly made from the tobacco trimmings from full-size Cohiba cigars. It's made in the Dominican Republic, of course.
The underside of the lid of the tin reads: "Cohiba Pequenos - Exceptional tasting, these cigars are handmade with a blend of Dominican long filler, a Jember binder and a rich Cameroon wrapper. It is the perfect cigar when only the taste of a large cigar will do." A label on the outer side of the tin, and on each cigar inside the tin, says "Made in the Dominican Republic. Never associated with the Cuban cigar sold under the same name outside the U.S. Not made from Cuban-grown tobacco." Of course, the Surgeon General's warning is on there, too, for good measure.
The outer Cameroon wrapper is a darker brown leaf with only the tiniest possible veins visible in it. It was quite solidly constructed and stood up to my full-size cigar punch without destroying itself. It lit easily and burned extremely evenly, all the way down to the point that it started to burn my fingers. (This gives you some idea of the experience of smoking it.)
The aroma of the smoke was very pleasant and not the least bit harsh. The flavor was decently mild, though the smoke definitely had some body and character to it. I got 25-30 minutes out of the cigar on a 94-degree day in the outdoors. (Your mileage may vary.) I definitely enjoyed this little cigar, and was inspired to buy a 6-cigar box on CigarBid not long after smoking it. Consider it definitely recommended, especially if you don't have the time for a full-size cigar. You're definitely not sacrificing quality here, in my opinion.
On a 1-10 scale, with 10 being excellent, this little gem ought to rate at least an 8.9.
Below are a couple of pictures of the same cigar, to give you a good idea of its appearance and construction:
